Climate Action Survey Questions | John Mannion (Dem) |
Do you agree that there is a nearly unanimous agreement among scientists studying climate that burning fossil fuels is the primary cause of global warming leading to the climate crisis? Do you accept that scientific conclusion? | Yes |
Do you believe that climate change is already adversely affecting your district? Please give examples of such effects. | Yes, stronger hurricanes and tornadoes are prevalent. |
What priority would you assign to climate change matters? | I support transitioning to alternative energy sources, away from fossil fuels. |
Do you support a carbon tax? Please explain. | Yes |
If so how would you use the money raised? If not, how would you allow the market to reflect the impacts of burning fossil fuels? | The money should be spent to make green energy sources more competitive in the marketplace, in the short term. |
Do you support building more nuclear plants? Please explain. | Nuclear energy is not a long term, safe energy solution. Transitioning away from fossil fuels is a priority and nuclear energy plays a role in that transition. That stated, I have a strong preference to not build additional plants. |
Would you support rejoining the Paris Climate Accord? | Yes |
Would you support measures to immediately reduce the release of methane a very potent greenhouse gas from drilling, pumping and refining sites throughout the state? | Yes |
Do you support incentives for renewable energy development? | Yes |
Do you support a changeover to electric vehicles? If so how would you do so? | Yes, I own one! Federal and state incentives/rebates should be extended and expanded. |
New York State has enacted one of the most ambitious climate changes laws in the nation, the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. How would you support its implementation? | It needs to be funded properly. I would support and demand that any project receiving public tax dollars, has energy saving and clean energy practices built into their plan. |
Energy Conservation through efficiency standards and building codes is essential to lower greenhouse gas emissions. How would you support these efforts? | I’m open to listening to suggestions on this issue. |
If elected, what steps would you support to address global warming at the state level? | I would continue to support initiatives included in the new clean energy law, look for ways to expand it and place pressure on our federal representatives. |
Would you support banning fracking for oil and natural gas in NYS? | Yes. Fracking is dangerous. I stand against it under all circumstances. |
Would you support divestment from the fossil fuel industry by the State Pension Fund? | I support the Comptroller to make those decisions and believe that eventually, divestment will occur. |
